BIOGRAPHY



Robert Douglas Thomas Pattinson (Born 13 May 1986, London) is a British actor and musician.

Robert first came to the attention of fans in 2005 playing Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.  His first foray into acting came via amateur theatre at the Barnes Theatre Company where he was cast in Guys and Dolls, Our Town, Anything Goes, Macbeth and Tess of the d'Urbervilles. It was during this last role that Robert came to the attention of a casting agent.

During 2004 to 2007, he had supporting roles in various films both screen and made for television, but Robert's biggest breakthrough would come in 2008 when he landed the role of Edward Cullen in Twilight.  2008 would also see him land roles in small indie films such as Oliver Irving's How To Be and Paul Morrison's Little Ashes.  But the success of Twilight would see him reprise the role of Edward Cullen from 2009 to 2012 in the next 4 instalments of the saga.

During 2009, Rob would also star in Allen Coulter's Remember Me, of which he was also executive producer.  In 2010, Robert would go on to star in Donnellan & Ormerod's directorial debut of the screen adaptation of Guy de Maupassant's 1885 novel Bel Ami and Francis Lawrence's adaptation of Sara Gruen's novel, Water for Elephants.  However, Robert's second breakthrough would come in 2012 when he was cast in David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis. Although the movie received a lukewarm response, what it did achieve was a turnaround in the perception of Robert's acting.  The film premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and competed for the Palme d'Or.  It was the first time one of Robert's films premiered at the Festival, but it was not going to be the last.  It was also the beginning of Robert focusing on building a resume of working with some of his favourite and renowned indie directors.

In 2013 the world would see Robert in a slightly different role as the face of Dior Homme Fragrances.   The campaign titled 1000 Lives included a short film shot by Romain Gavras, featuring model Camille Rowe and photographed by Nan Goldin.  Goldin would later release a book entitled "Robert Pattinson 1000 Lives" featuring shots from the shoot.  The uncensored version of the steamy commercial has garnered over 21 million YouTube hits.  It is understood that Robert signed on as the face of Dior Homme for 3 years.

In 2014, Robert would again be back at Cannes with not one but two film premieres.  The first would be a special screening of David Michod's The Rover in which Robert would win his most critical acclaim to date for his performance of Rey opposite Guy Pearce.  The second was Robert's second film with David Cronenberg which was again competing for the Palme d'Or, Maps to the Stars.  Although Robert's role was minor, his performance was again well received.

In 2015, Robert's films with Werner Herzog's Queen of the Desert (in competition for the Golden Bear) and Anton Corbijn's Life (special screening) both premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.  During the start of 2015, Robert filmed Brady Corbet's directorial debut, The Childhood of a Leader which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2015 and won best debut film and best director.  Since then, it has screened at numerous festivals picking up more awards.  Mid year in 2015, James Gray's The Lost City of Z finally went into production filming in Ireland and Colombia.

In 2016, Robert filmed the Safdie Bros "Good Time" and went way under the radar when it emerged he was on set filming the Zellner Bros "Damsel".   The trailer for The Lost City of Z was leaked in April 2016, and the initial reaction was stellar.  The film had its World Premiere at the 54th New York Film Festival and it international premiere at Berlinale in 2017 with worldwide release following. The critics reviews so far have been outstanding.

In 2017, Robert collected major accolades along the way for his "ambitious and intriguing projects".  In addition to the release of The Lost City of Z, 2017 saw Robert back at the 70th Cannes Film Festival with the Safdie Bros "Good Time" in competition for the Palme d'Or.  Robert on the Croisette is always happiness. The film might not have won the Palm d'Or or Best Actor for Robert, it did however win best soundtrack for OPN and garnered the best attention for Robert with critics claiming the best performance of his career (and confirmed by Rob winning the International Cinephile Society Award for Best Actor).  The Safdies and Rob experienced a 6 minute standing ovation at the end of the Cannes premiere. To date the film has received wide acclaim especially in relation to Robert's performance.  2017 also saw Rob finally film Claire Denis' "High Life" which is currently in post production and although it didn't premiere at Cannes as hoped, there are rumours swirling that it may premiere at the Venice Film Festival held in Aug/September 2018.

As predicted, the beginning of 2018 saw the Zellner Bros "Damsel" with Mia Wasikowska have its international premiere at Sundance and although it had mixed reviews, Rob's performance received positive praise again.  The film also had its world premiere at Berlinale on 16 February 2018 before heading off to SXSX in Austin Texas in March.  Magnolia Pictures came on board to distribute in the US with a 22 June 2018 release.  It has also had a myriad of screenings at film festivals across the Globe.  Sadly nothing for Sydney, although it did have two screenings at the Melbourne International Film Festival in July/August 2018.

In 2018, Rob filmed Robert Egger's next project "The Lighthouse" with Willem Dafoe in Nova Scotia.  News swirled on 31 May 2018, that Rob had officially joined David Michod and Joel Edgerton's "The King" - there was definitely a "was he wasn't he" period for some time when it mysteriously appeared on Rob's IMDbPro page.  It was good to finally see official confirmation that he was in fact involved and would be portraying The Dauphin.  

High Life had it's world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival on 9 September 2018.  Again, much like Damsel it has had mixed reviews, although the critics have loved it and Claire Denis garnered the Critics Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival.  Rob attended all three premieres - TIFF, SIFF and NYFF.  

Rob next filmed Ciro Guerra's adaptation of J M Coetzee's Nobel Prize winning novel "Waiting for the Barbarians" in November and December 2018.  Oscar winner, Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) stars as The Magistrate and Johnny Depp as Colonel Joll alongside Rob as Warrant Officer Mandel. That finished up the year in films that we are all eagerly anticipating to watch in 2019.

2019 saw Rob surprising fans of Good Time at the screening of the film at the Kerwin Frost Film Festival in Brooklyn, New York in March. Rob was in Brooklyn due to some reshoots for The Lighthouse. Filming Antonio Campos', The Devil All the Time in Birmingham, Alabama in March kickstarted the year in respect of Rob filming. Originally it was reported that Rob would portray "Roy Laferty" but it turns out that information was incorrect and Rob was in fact playing the sleazy Preacher Preston Teagardin. Rob had previously talked about his role with Esquire UK where he was quoted as saying:

There;s this line in it — and sometimes that's all you need. And it's like, 'Ooh that's scary to say. Because it'll go down in posterity and I'll be the one saying it. You literally cannot get darker. It's fucking dark. This character is an evangelical preacher in the South in the Fifties, but he's gleefully bad and kind of funny and charismatic too. I know, it's irresistible.

What was considered one of the strangest rumours of 2019 that Rob was being linked to Matt Reeves' The Batman film - turned out to be the news of the year. Rob is officially #TheBatman. Another surprise casting was Rob in Christopher Nolan's new film "Tenet" which is currently in post production with a release date of 17 July 2020. Rob spent time in between shooting Tenet promoting The Lighthouse which had its premiere at Toronto International Film Festival. Rob received rave reviews for his portrayal of Ephraim Winslow and although word was that A24 would campaign for Rob to be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar it never transpired. Also released at Venice Film Festival was The King. Again Rob's cameo (which is about 15 minutes in all in a 2hr 20 min film) received some incredible reviews with people saying he steals the limelight of the film (I have to agree). Waiting for the Barbarians also premiered at Venice. However, Rob's tiny role is apparently a long wait - currently there is no release date for the film. During October, Mill Valley International Film Festival also ran a "Spotlight" on Rob's career and presented him with their award.

The beginning of 2020 saw Rob on the set of The Batman filming in the UK. However, on 14 March 2020, it was confirmed that filming was suspended as a safeguard to COVID-19. On 25 March 2020, Matt Reeves confirmed that filming had been shutdown and that at this stage everyone involved was safe and well. It later transpired that Andrew Jack, a voice coach on the film, passed away due to COVID-19. With only one quarter of the film complete and the release date pushed back to 1 October 2021. On 22 August 2020, Rob and Matt Reeves took part in the first virtual DC Fandome where the teaser trailer was unleashed and Rob's "I'm Vengeance" fight scene may have broke the internet. Filming recommenced on 1 September 2020 but then shut down 3 days later with Warner Bros stating a "crew member" had tested positive for COVID-19. Media subsequently reported that the "crew member" was Rob, however, Warner Bros never confirmed as they don't discuss private matters. Interestingly Matt Reeves did not tweet either. Filming did recommence on 17 September 2020.

Some of the world finally saw the release of Tenet, notably Europe and Asia on 26 August 2020 with the North American release (except NY and LA) on 3 September 2020. China, its biggest box office potential, released on 4 September 2020. With heavy promotion on TV screens and social media, we were also treated to a virtual press junket where the bromance between Rob and JDW was in full swing. The movie was met with lukewarm reception, but one thing was consistent and that was praise for Rob's performance as Neil.

In the meantime, Ciro Guerra's Waiting for the Barbarians was officially released on VOD in the US on 7 August 2020 and in Australia via Digital and DVD on 7 October 2020. Rob is only in the film for a short time, but again, the reviews of his performance have been stellar and having now seen it, I can confirm his role is short but fabulous.

Also in August 2020, Antonio Campos and Netflix "The Devil All the Time" provided us with a trailer ahead of its 16 September 2020 release. Again, Rob has received rave reviews for his performance and in my opinion, Rob yet again stole the show with his sinister delusion preaching Preston Teagardin.

Outside of Rob's films, GQ cleverly had Rob become a photographer producing some incredible self portraits that he took whilst in lockdown in April for their May article. We always knew he was a man of many talents. I wonder if he will ever give us any outtakes!

In other film news, Mona Fastvold's "The Bleaching Yard" which was mentioned by Brady during a 2016 interview, looks like it may have fallen by the wayside. Variety recently reported in May 2021 that financing fell through 3 times and is why the film was never made.

The start of 2021 confirmed that The Batman cast and crew were back on set, that they had a few exemptions no thanks to the UK Covid lockdown and that they were on track to finishing shooting in around February / March 2021 - which they did. And although Screen Daily reported that filming on Claire Denis's The Stars at Noon may commence in April 2021, Claire Denis spoke with LeMonde France and said she was happy to work with Rob when he's done and dusted with Batman "He told me that after Batman he would be a mess/wreck. I'm happy. I don't give a damn. I’m taking Robert Pattinson as he is. And he'll take me as I am.". However, in July 2021 we learnt that Rob had pulled out of the film due to an upcoming commitment.

2022 is the year of The Batman and the end of 2021 gave us a new trailer "The Bat and the Cat". Here's looking forward to some great news about new projects for Rob in 2022.

We started 2022 with promo for The Batman and Matt Reeves confirming that he had Rob in mind when writing the script and Rob confirming that he was fixated on being The Batman. The stars aligned and this is why we get to see Rob in the latest iteration.

Bong Hoon Jo also wants to work with Rob. We heard Rob was in talks to star in Bong Hoon's adaptation of Edward Ashton's sci-fi novel Mickey7. Rob's was offered the role and thankfully he accepted. Currently Mickey17 is in post production with March 2024 release date. We can't wait to see Rob's interpretation of Mickey.

So far in 2023 it's been very quiet with Rob keeping a relatively low profile other than being spotted just having "coffee" with some A-list directors such as TÁR director Todd Field and Edward Berger, director of Netflix’s Oscar-nominated All Quiet on the Western Front. The Batman 2 is set to start filming in the latter part of the year and we've heard that Rob's collaborating on a script with Gabriel Moses. As for film roles, Rob ia attached to Adam McKay's next project "Average Height, Average Build" which was acquired by Netflix.  However since the SAG-AFTRA writer's and actors' strikes happened in late June/early July all work on projects is at a standstill and at the time of writing this it is unknown when either Batman2 or AHAB will be filmed.  Hope Rob is enjoying his time off, but knowing Rob there are projects bubbling away in the background.  Last rumour circulating was that Rob is in talks to star in Chloé Zhao's Dracula remake for Universal Studios. Time will tell how the later half of this year unfolds.

Rob's career is going from strength to strength, receiving critical reviews for performances - it's been a long time coming but people are finally tuning in to what we've known all along. Further proof of that came with the announcement on 24 May 2021 that Rob had signed a "first look" deal with Warner Bros, Warner Bros TV, New Line Cinema and HBO Max. Rob's eclectic tastes and keen eye for talent will be put to further good use not just for his career but for the careers of those Rob believes in.

As for Dior, Robert is still the face of Dior Homme. The "I'm Your Man" campaign was slowly unleashed in 2020. In December 2020 we were treated to a new photoshoot by David Sims for the Dior Spring 2021 campaign. And although Dior relaunched the "I'm Your Man" campaign in the week leading up to Kim Jones latest "virtual show" in Paris on 22 Jan 2021, there was no appearance by Rob. Outside of acting, Robert has been a supporter of various charities including Hope for Haiti Now, Stand Up to Cancer, the GO Campaign since 2013 (he was announced in Nov 2015 as first ambassador and assisted their 2021 COVID Relief Efforts for India), International Medical Corps becoming a first responder, Prostate Cancer Research Foundation, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.  On 15 November 2017, Rob was co-chair of the inaugural Fred Hollows Foundation Gala in Los Angeles along with Lisa Wilkinson, Joel Edgerton, Leonardo Di Caprio and Al Pacino to name a few.  In April 2018, Rob showed his support by filming a PSA for the Turtle Conservancy.

Musically, Robert plays both guitar and piano and writes his own music.  One of his songs, Never Think, which he cowrote with Sam Bradley was featured on the soundtrack of Twilight and he sang three songs, not his own, on the soundtrack of How To Be.  In 2011, Robert was in the audience at a intimate concert for Songs From a Room in London when he decided to do an impromptu performance of an original song.  In recent times, Death Grips' sampled Robert playing guitar on their track "Birds".

With regards to film soundtracks, as we are all aware, Rob has 2 songs on Twilight, and he can now add Damsel and High Life, the former singing a song penned by David Zellner called "Honeybun" and the latter a song called "Willow" written by Stuart A Staples of the Tindersticks which was released on iTunes in March 2019. Of course he also sings Pretty Girl Rock in The Rover and that lovely little sea shanty ditty in The Lighthouse.
